💕 Story Overview

In #MAGICademy S2E11, we will dive into the fascinating world of brain waves with Dr. Jeff Tarrant, a counseling psychologist and expert in psychophysiology. He unravels the mysteries of our brain's electrical activity, from the slow, dreamy delta waves to the lightning-fast gamma frequencies during the flow state, where creativity and productivity soar.

MAGICal Insights

  • Brain waves range from slow (delta, theta, alpha) to fast (beta, high beta, gamma). The distribution and balance of these waves directly impact our mental functioning. For instance, the "flow state" - characterized by high integration and effortless focus - is associated with gamma waves.

  • ADHD is typically associated with an excess of slow brainwaves (theta) in relation to fast brainwaves (beta), particularly in the frontal lobes. This imbalance can lead to difficulties with executive functioning and attention. Interestingly, people with fast brainwave activity can also mimic ADHD symptoms, potentially indicating an overstimulated or anxious brain. Getting into movement or a quick walk for example can be an easy way to tackle both types.

  • Chronic stress is often associated with prolonged narrow focus. The open-focus brain wave state is characterized by diffuse attention, synchronous alpha brain waves, and an awareness of space, resulting in a relaxed and inclusive mental state. Open focused state can be achieved through specific exercises and biofeedback training.
